Chuck Chellman - Songwriters ParadeParade of Stars’ Chuck Chellman has had a varied, yet exciting life in the music industry.

Music, travel and sports have given him a wonderful working view of the entire world. Music and athletics, along with a career in travel, have given him insights and experiences that few can compare. He is considered an expert in all three fields.

His father immigrated from Sweden and settled in Western Pennsylvania, where he worked as a coal miner, tire maker and glass worker. His father’s strong work ethic was passed along to his children.

Chellman graduated from Jeannette, PA high school, attended Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, and West Virginia University. He worked as a bass player and singer for many stars and served the United States Amateur Boxing Association as a referee, judge and international ambassador for the USA in the sport of boxing. He is a member of the Tennessee/Alabama/Georgia Boxing Hall of Fame. He was president of the Nashville Amateur Boxing Association for 13 years and president of the Southeastern AAU for two years, over all sports.

Upon leaving college, Chuck had the opportunity to work on the road with stars such as Frankie Laine, Martha Raye, The McGuire Sisters, Eartha Kitt, Ketty Lester, Ray Eberle Orchestra and The Charlie Spivak Orchestra.

When he got off the road as a singer/musician, he returned home to land a job as the promotion executive at Decca Records in Pittsburgh. Being extremely successful there, he was promoted to Branch Manager of Decca’s Cleveland branch, where he spent 4 1/2years, bringing the branch from 19th place in America to #4 in the nation. Then came a job offer from Shelby Singleton, to become National Promotion Director for the Country Division of Mercury Records, where he furthered the careers of Faron Young, Roger Miller, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Drusky, Dave Dudley, etc. From there, Chuck took the job as Marketing Director for Starday Records. At the time, Starday was the largest independent producer of country, bluegrass and gospel music in America. Leaving Starday, he joined Monument Records as VP Marketing & Promotion, working with Roy Orbison, Ray Stevens, Boots Randolph, Charles Aznavour, Dolly Parton, etc.

Chellman left Monument to join legendary producer, and founder of Nashville recording, Paul Cohen, where they started the Country Division of Kapp Records. The Kapp Records days were most exciting because it began the careers of Mel Tillis, Hugh X. Lewis, Cal Smith, Freddie Hart, and continued the career of the legendary Bob Wills. Paul Cohen, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, was the true pioneer of Nashville’s becoming the cradle of Country Music. Later on, Cohen became ill. Paul and Chuck both left Kapp Records.

This period gave birth to The Chuck Chellman Company, the first firm to do independent country promotion on a national basis. The company did promotions on all kinds of music. The clients included Webb Pierce, Hollywood’s Jack Palance, Engelbert Humperdinck, Ed Ames, Motown Records, Buddah Records, Irving Berlin Music, United Artists Records & Music, RCA, CBS, BASF Records, Mercury Records, Kapp Records, Bourne Music, Fantasy Records, Decca, Curb, MGM, Kool & The Gang, Janis Ian, CBS Songs, London Records, Perry Como, Eddy Arnold, Ernest Tubb, Dave Brubeck, Townes Van Zant, Melissa Manchester, Atlantic Records, KoKo Taylor, Regent/Arc Music,The Wilburn Brothers, etc. The list goes on and on. Space does not permit all the others who Chuck has had the pleasure of working with.

Chellman has been involved with more hit records than any individual in America, in all types of music! His record distribution, promotion, publishing and production credits are too many to mention. He did it all. He worked with all the greats and still considers all of them friends. He now brings all this experience to you in Parade Of Stars.

While working as an independent music person, in 1972 he founded The Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame Foundation, which is still going strong today. In 1998, he gave it as a gift to The Country Radio Broadcasters of America. The annual banquet is the highlight of radio professionals from across the nation at the yearly CRS gathering.

Chellman also served for ten years as president of The Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society, a respected nonprofit organization established in 1972. (His experience in the jazz & blues field is very deep.)

As a producer, Chellman owns Renegade Records, a small label that sold masters to Fantasy, ABC/Dot, Tower (Capitol), BASF Records, MCA, Free Flight (RCA), and many others. He was the producer of many hours of full-orchestra music for MUZAK. He was also involved in the productions of ex-Creedence Clearwater’s John Fogerty’s Blue Ridge Rangers. His production credits are many, and in all fields of music.

Parade Of Stars was purchased by Chellman in 1973. The publication began in approximately 1968 by Russ Allison, who was employed by Al Bennett’s Memphis Music Group.

In addition to Parade of Stars, Chuck Chellman is Vice President of Sales for Caldwell Travel & Tours, Inc., of Nashville, TN., a major supplier of worldwide travel.
