By the time you get this issue, you will have already known of the passing of everybody’s friend, Jerry Reed. He was 71 years young and died of complications from emphysema. We’ve know he was gravely ill for quite a while but it just wasn’t talked about within the industry. I guess we were all hoping he’d pull through. Keep his family in your prayers. More in our monthly E-News. He has been a true friend since the 60’s.
I’m so happy I got to go to drummer Buddy Harman’s funeral. Harman passed away last weekend. During the service we were treated to a wonderful quartet led by Marty Stuart, then the wonderful Mandy Barnett, the Jordanaaires and finally, Vince Gill. It was great getting a hug from Brenda Lee. It was good seeing Sonny James, also. For those of you who aren’t aware of Buddy Harman, he played on over 18,000 sessions. During the sixties, he played on 600 sessions per year. You’ve heard his drumming on Patsy Cline’s “Crazy”, and Orbison’s “Oh Pretty Woman”, “Only the Lonely”, etc. It was Buddy Harman’s drumming on Johnny Horton’s “Waterloo”, and many, many Elvis Presley records. His shuffle drumming was on Ray Price’s “Crazy Arms”, Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by You Man”, Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”, Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miners Daughter” and many others. Buddy was the regular drummer on the Opry and did many tour dates with Jerry Lee Lewis. He later worked as business agent for the local musician’s union. He was always ready to talk music. Any kind of music, since he played on country, pop, bluegrass, big band and jazz sessions. Buddy was 79 and died of congestive heart failure. He was one of a kind. |
